Sand & Cement Rendering in Somerset & Dorset

Traditional two-coat sand and cement rendering for modern properties. Reliable, cost-effective and suitable for full re-renders, extensions and render repairs across Somerset.

Traditional Sand & Cement Rendering

Sand and cement rendering has been used in the UK for over a century and remains a popular choice for external wall finishing on modern brick and block properties. While newer rendering systems have emerged, sand and cement render is still widely used for its cost-effectiveness, strength and versatility.

At Render-It Ltd, our experienced team applies sand and cement render using the traditional two-coat system — a scratch coat for adhesion and a finish coat for the final appearance. We carefully mix our render to the correct proportions and moisture content to ensure a strong, crack-resistant result.

Sand and cement render can be applied to a range of different substrates including brick, concrete blockwork, concrete panels and stable existing render. The finish can be left textured, pebbledashed, tyrolean, or painted with a quality masonry paint to achieve your desired look.

Sand & Cement Rendering FAQs

What is sand and cement rendering?

Sand and cement rendering is the traditional method of applying an external wall finish using a mix of sharp sand, cement and water. It is typically applied in two coats — a scratch coat and a finish coat — and can be left as a textured finish or painted. It remains a cost-effective choice for many types of property.

Is sand and cement render suitable for all properties?

Sand and cement render is best suited to modern brick and block buildings. It should NOT be used on older stone buildings or historic properties — for these, lime render is the appropriate choice as it is breathable. We will advise which system is right for your property.

How long does sand and cement render last?

Sand and cement render, when correctly mixed and applied to a sound substrate, can last 20–30 years. However, being less flexible than modern systems, it may develop hairline cracks over time, particularly on properties subject to movement. Regular painting and maintenance helps extend its life.

Can I have render repairs rather than a full re-render?

Yes — in many cases we can carry out targeted render repairs to patch failed areas rather than re-rendering the whole property. We will assess the extent of the damage and advise on the most cost-effective solution.
