Learn to Plaster — Hands-On Training Days
Always wanted to plaster your own walls but don't know where to start? Our DIY plastering training days give you the skills and confidence to tackle plastering jobs around your own home — from basic patch repairs to skimming a whole room.
Led by Render-It Ltd's professional plasterers with years of hands-on trade experience, our training days are practical, fun and pitched at exactly the right level for complete beginners. You'll spend most of the day with tools in hand — actually plastering — rather than sitting through lectures.
Whether you're renovating a property, want to save money on small jobs, or simply fancy learning a new skill, our training days are the perfect introduction to one of the UK's most in-demand trades.
What You'll Learn
Mixing Plaster Correctly
The correct water-to-plaster ratio, mixing technique and achieving the right consistency. A crucial foundation skill that beginners often get wrong.
Preparing Walls & Surfaces
How to assess and prepare different surfaces before plastering — removing old paint, applying PVA and bonding agents, and ensuring surfaces are dust-free.
Applying Plaster
How to load and apply plaster to the wall using a hawk and trowel, achieving even coverage and the right thickness without dropping or wasting material.
Flattening & Ruling Off
Using a darby or straightedge to level the plaster surface and identify high and low spots before the material sets.
Trowelling to a Finish
The technique of trowelling the surface smooth as it firms up — including the timing, angle and water use that separates a good finish from a bad one.
Patch Repairs
How to cut out damaged plaster, fill and build up a repair area level with the surrounding wall, and skim over the patch to blend it in.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The most common beginner errors — from mixing too wet to trowelling too early — and how to recognise and recover from them.
Tools & Equipment
An introduction to the tools of the trade: hawks, floats, trowels, mixing paddles and buckets — what each one does and how to care for them.

Training Day FAQs
Do I need any experience to attend the plastering training day?
No experience is needed at all. Our training days are designed for complete beginners who want to learn the basics of plastering. We start from scratch and take you through everything step by step in a supportive, hands-on environment.
What is included in the plastering training day?
Your training day includes all tools and materials — you do not need to bring anything. We provide plastering tools, plaster, mixing equipment and a dedicated wall or boards for you to practice on. Lunch and refreshments are also provided.
How many people are on each training day?
We keep our training groups small — typically 4 to 6 people maximum — to ensure everyone gets plenty of one-to-one time with the instructor and hands-on practice time on the tools.
What will I be able to do after the training day?
After a full day of training, you will be able to mix plaster correctly, apply a base coat, skim a wall to a reasonable finish, carry out basic patch repairs, and understand how to avoid common plastering mistakes. Most attendees leave confident enough to tackle small rooms or repairs at home.
Where are the training days held?
