Expert Skimming Services
Skimming is one of the most satisfying plastering jobs — transforming a rough, uneven or damaged surface into a beautifully smooth finish that takes paint perfectly. Render-It Ltd's plasterers are expert skimmers, applying finish plaster at the correct consistency and working it to a glass-smooth surface with the steel trowel.
We carry out skimming throughout Somerset and Dorset on all types of surfaces: existing plaster that has been painted or papered, bare plasterboard, patched walls after repair works, and old artex or textured ceilings. Each surface requires a slightly different preparation approach to ensure the skim coat bonds correctly and cures without cracking.
We use premium finish plasters and take pride in achieving a consistently flat, blemish-free surface. We also ensure the room is properly protected and left clean and tidy on completion.
When Do You Need Skimming?
Old or Rough Walls
Walls with multiple layers of old paint, wallpaper marks or uneven texture can be skimmed to provide a fresh, smooth surface.
After Plasterboard Installation
Freshly boarded walls and ceilings need a skim coat of finish plaster to complete the surface and hide board joints.
Following Repairs
After plumbing, electrical or structural work that has damaged walls or ceilings, skimming restores a seamless surface.
Textured Ceiling Renovation
Artex or textured ceilings can often be overskimmed to create a modern, smooth look without full replacement.
Property Renovation
During whole-house renovations, skimming throughout creates consistent, fresh surfaces for redecoration.
Pre-Sale Preparation
Smooth, well-finished walls and ceilings significantly improve the presentation of a property for sale.
Skimming FAQs
What is skimming?
Skimming is the process of applying a thin coat of finish plaster over an existing surface to create a perfectly smooth finish. It is used to renovate rough or uneven walls and ceilings, and to resurface surfaces that have been damaged or have had coving and sockets removed.
How thick is a skim coat of plaster?
A skim coat is typically 2–3mm thick. Unlike a full plaster build-up, skimming is a thin finish coat designed to provide a smooth surface for decoration rather than to level out major unevenness.
Can you skim over artex or textured ceilings?
Yes — in most cases, artex and textured ceilings can be overskimmed to create a smooth surface. However, artex ceilings in properties built before 1985 may contain asbestos and should be tested before any work is carried out. We can advise on the appropriate approach for your ceiling.
How long does skimming a room take?
A typical room skim takes 1–2 days depending on the size of the room and the condition of the existing surface. Allow a further 3–7 days for the new plaster to dry fully before painting.
