Plaster Repairs in Somerset & Dorset

Expert repair of cracked, blown and damp-damaged plaster across Somerset and Dorset. We restore walls and ceilings to their original condition — matched to the existing finish.

Professional Plaster Repairs

Over time, even well-applied plaster can develop cracks, become loose or suffer damage from damp, impacts or building movement. Render-It Ltd provides expert plaster repair services throughout Somerset and Dorset, restoring damaged walls and ceilings to a smooth, sound finish.

Our approach to plaster repairs is thorough: we cut back to sound material, treat any underlying issues (such as damp or substrate movement), apply appropriate base coats to build up the area level with the surrounding surface, and finish with a skim coat that blends as seamlessly as possible with the existing plaster.

We carry out plaster repairs of all sizes — from minor crack filling to replacing large sections of damaged plaster following roof leaks, plumbing bursts or structural remediation.

Types of Plaster Repair

Crack Repairs

Fine cracks raked out, treated with stabiliser and filled with fresh plaster or flexible filler, then skimmed smooth.

Blown Plaster Removal

Hollow, loose plaster cut back to the original substrate, substrate treated and new plaster applied in matching coats.

Damp-Damaged Plaster

Damp-affected plaster removed, wall dried, damp-proofing applied if required, and replastered with salt-resistant materials.

Impact Damage Repair

Holes and impact damage filled, built up and skimmed to match the surrounding wall surface.

Post-Work Repairs

Plaster repairs following plumbing, electrical or structural works — filling chases, patching around new pipes and cables.

Ceiling Repairs

Sagging, cracked or damaged plaster ceilings repaired or replaced to eliminate safety risks and restore appearance.

Plaster Repair FAQs

What causes plaster to crack?

Plaster can crack for a number of reasons including building movement and settlement, thermal expansion and contraction, vibration from nearby construction, structural problems, damp penetration, or simply old age. Fine hairline cracks are usually cosmetic; wider or recurring cracks may indicate a more serious issue that should be investigated.

What does blown plaster mean?

Blown plaster (also called hollow plaster) is plaster that has lost its bond with the wall or ceiling behind it. It sounds hollow when tapped and may bulge or fall away. Blown plaster is often caused by damp, frost action, or the failure of the bonding between coats. It must be cut back and replaced.

Can plaster repairs be blended to match existing walls?

Yes — we work carefully to match the texture, depth and profile of the surrounding plaster so that repaired sections are as invisible as possible. In some cases, the repaired area may still be visible once dry due to different porosity, but this usually evens out with a couple of coats of paint.

Should I repair or replace cracked plaster?

This depends on the extent of the damage and the underlying cause. Small isolated cracks can usually be repaired effectively. Widespread cracking, blown areas or damp-damaged plaster may require larger sections or whole rooms to be replastered. We will assess and advise on the most cost-effective approach.
